Kitchen Curtains
Site current as of
Kitchen curtains can make or break the atmosphere of your kitchen. Curtains frame your window and help give life to your room. You want them to complement the wall color, flooring and/or cabinets. They don't have to match perfectly, but they should hopefully draw those three pieces together.
If you have no budget for window treatments such as roman shades, as curtains can be quite expensive at times depending on your tastes, you can use simple dish towels hung over curtain rods or sew in curtain rings for more stability. Be sure to wash them regularly as they will absorb the grease and smells of your cooking; clean curtains/drapes are much healthier.
The nice thing about kitchen curtains is how easy they can be to change out with the seasons. Typically your kitchen windows are smaller so the cost of curtains is less than for other rooms in the home. Whether you buy commercially sewn curtains or make them yourself, you can give your entire kitchen a face lift just by changing those curtains. You could even use beaded curtains if you have an interest in the retro styles.
Another nice trick is to use placemats as curtains. Hang several of them over the curtain rod at an angle, overlapping them for effect. Adjust to your tastes. You could use the same color for every mat or alternate colors. This can add a inexpensive stylish cover for your kitchen windows.
When it comes to matching styles and colors, some people attempt to match the curtains to their kitchen cabinets. We personally don't feel this is largely important, although you wouldn't want the patterns to clash significantly, but pretty much anything goes with wood.
